Common Core In Relation to How The Grinch Stole Christmas

For this study guide, we focused on incorporating elements of the production How The Grinch Stole Christmas into a fourth grade classroom setting. By following the English Language Arts Common Core Standards for Grade 4, we were able to integrate aspects of the play into educational exercises and information. How The Grinch Stole Christmas is an entertaining learning experience and is a perfect way to bring some fun into the academic setting.

The English Language Arts Common Core Standards highlight the skills that students need for college and career readiness. Our timeline offers contextual information that can be applied to CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.7 because it is a visual representation of events that correlate with the production. The timeline further shows how background information can contribute to the understanding of a text. Background information is further provided through a detailed summary of setting and contextual information. These elements on the study guide correlate with CCSS.ELA-LITERACY. RL. 4.3 because they use the text to provide an in depth description. Themes of the play also follows the common core standard CCSS.ELA-LITERACY. RL.4.2. By providing the themes in this study guide, students can use them as a tool to further analyze the text. They can also create their own themes and then use our school study guide to check their accuracy. Our glossary of terms provides definitions of words found in the text and correlates with CCSS.ELA-LITERACY. RL. 4.4. Students can highlight words in the text, use context to determine their meaning, and then check for accuracy in our glossary.

Our selected exercises further showcase ways in which the Grinch can be applied to a classroom setting. These exercises incorporate elements of critical reading and give students a chance to interpret themes, setting, and characters. The exercises are interactive and hands on, allowing students to become active participants in their learning experience. We are confident that attending the production will not only be a fun experience for students, but it will also enrich their education.
