Descriptions of Characters 4

Mark Cohen – He constantly carries his video camera with him in order to record the life he and his friends live. He hopes these recordings will help him become a professional filmmaker. He is Maureen’s ex-boyfriend and the closest friend to Roger. He is the only character from the main cast that does not have HIV/AIDS.

Roger Davis – He is a musician that had a bright future until he found out that he has HIV/AIDS because of his former girlfriend, who committed suicide after informing Roger of his disease through a letter. He fears the love he has for Mimi because she also has HIV/AIDS.

Mimi Marquez – She is a naiive young woman that works as a stripper. Due to her heroin addiction, she has HIV/AIDS. She loves Roger in return.

Benny Coffin III – He is the landlord for the apartment building Mark and Roger live in. He begins to require the two young men to pay rent or else they will get evicted. His focus is more on money than on friends in the beginning but slowly progresses until he realizes friends are more precious.

Maureen Johnson – She is Mark’s ex-girlfriend; she broke up with him for Joanne. She is outspoken and comes off as extremely flirtatious with men and women.

Joanne Jefferson – She is Maureen’s jealous girlfriend. She comes from a wealthy family and studied to be a lawyer, but that does not stop her from helping those in need.

Tom Collins – He is an intelligent gay man that is in love with Angel. Their relationship is very hopeful and intimate despite the fact that they both suffer from HIV/AIDS.

Angel Schunard – He is a young transvestite that deeply cares for Tom. Out of all of the characters, Angel is the friendliest and most generous. All of the other characters are inspired by him.
